Kidney Check-Ups Launched for Ahmedabad School Children

In a new initiative, the Pediatric Nephrology Department at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad is launching a pilot project to screen school children for kidney-related diseases. This project aims to identify potential kidney issues early among students aged 12 to 14 years. Doctors will visit various schools across Ahmedabad to conduct these health checks. The first phase of this initiative involves screening about 1,800 students from government, grant-in-aid, and private schools.

The screening process will include basic checks such as height and weight measurements, alongside a dipstick urine test. For this test, a small sample of urine will be collected, and a special strip will be dipped into it for around 30 seconds. This method helps detect infections or other signs of kidney problems. If any abnormalities, such as the presence of bacteria or signs of infection, are found, students will be advised to visit the hospital for further evaluations.

Along with the urine test, doctors will also ask students questions about their water intake and toilet habits. This project has received formal approval from the District Education Officer (DEO), and all participating schools have been informed through official circulars.

Dr. Pranjal Modi, the Director of IKDRC, has highlighted that kidney diseases in children are becoming increasingly common. He noted that about 20% of children per 10 million are now facing issues such as kidney stones, blocked valves, or non-functioning kidneys. Early screening, according to Dr. Modi, is essential to catch these problems before they escalate into serious health issues.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote health awareness among younger populations. If this pilot project proves successful, there are plans to expand it to include more students and younger age groups in the future.

Kidney diseases can often go unnoticed until they reach advanced stages. Therefore, this proactive approach aims to educate students and their families about kidney health and encourage a healthier lifestyle. The screening will not only help identify those at risk but also raise awareness about the importance of hydration and proper bathroom habits among children.

In recent years, kidney health has gained attention, particularly due to rising rates of conditions like diabetes and hypertension which can adversely affect kidney function. Similar health awareness programs have been organized across Gujarat, focusing on educating the public about the significance of healthy living and regular health checks.

This new initiative in Ahmedabad marks a significant step towards safeguarding children’s health. By identifying kidney problems early, healthcare providers can offer timely interventions and treatments, reducing the long-term impact of kidney diseases. The community is encouraged to support these efforts, as they contribute to the overall well-being of children and future generations.

In conclusion, the kidney screening initiative is an important public health measure that aims to protect the health of young people in Ahmedabad. With early detection and intervention, the aim is to reduce the prevalence and severity of kidney diseases in children, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for the community as a whole.
