Loan Scam Exposed in Vadodara: Fake Documents Used

In Vadodara, a significant loan scam has come to light. The scam involved presenting fake documents to obtain home loans from the State Bank of India (SBI). This case emerged through a whistleblower’s tip to the police. It was discovered that loans were acquired by providing false income proofs for six bank accounts. The investigation revealed shocking details about the involvement of bank agents and a document verification company based in Ahmedabad.

The bank’s fraud monitoring cell initiated an investigation after a complaint was filed in Ahmedabad. The probe revealed that multiple individuals, including loan holders and bank agents, colluded with employees of a verification agency named K. Pravinchandra and Associates. Together, they orchestrated a scam worth crores of rupees.

As a result, the bank filed a complaint against nine loan holders, two SBI agents, and five executives from the verification agency at the Gorwa police station. The complaint was lodged by Yagnesh Manubhai Patel, the chief manager of the bank. The SBI branch in the Ilorapark area of Vadodara had been processing various loans, including home loans.

Typically, potential loan customers meet with SBI Securities agents to submit their documents. The agents fill out the necessary forms and submit them to the bank. The verification of the client’s residence and employment is assigned to the aforementioned verification agency based in Ahmedabad.

During this process, it was revealed that loans were granted based on fraudulent documents. The SBI’s loan monitoring cell ordered an investigation in April 2024. The investigation uncovered that between 2021 and 2022, loans were obtained by presenting false income proofs.

The investigation identified several individuals who provided fake employment details for loan applications. Despite not working at the companies they claimed, these individuals submitted false documents like ID cards, appointment letters, salary slips, Form 16, and various bank statements. They allegedly paid around ₹1.70 lakh in commissions to secure these loans.

The agents involved, Prakash Dwivedi and Dharmendra Vrudanvanbhai Vaghela, submitted these files to the bank’s Ilorapark branch. The verification was carried out by field executives from K. Pravinchandra and Associates, who provided false job confirmation reports to the bank.

As a result of this scam, the Gorwa police station has initiated legal proceedings against all individuals involved, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The actions taken include filing cases for forgery and fraud. The police are currently searching for the accused individuals who have fled after the complaint was registered.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of fraud in the banking sector, particularly concerning loans. It raises questions about the effectiveness of the verification processes in place and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such scams in the future. The SBI’s fraud monitoring cell has stated that they will enhance their procedures to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Public awareness is crucial in preventing such scams. Individuals must be cautious when dealing with loans and ensure that they verify the credentials of agents and companies involved. The Vadodara loan scam serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in financial transactions and the need for transparency in banking operations.
