Low Interest in BSc at Gujarat University: A Trend of Declining Admissions

Gujarat University is facing a significant drop in admissions for its Bachelor of Science (BSc) courses. The university has recorded the lowest percentage of confirmed admissions among all undergraduate programs, standing at just 33%. This data comes from the final phase of undergraduate admissions conducted through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS).

Out of a total of 8,313 BSc seats available in colleges affiliated with Gujarat University, only 2,789 students have confirmed their admission. In stark contrast, other courses such as Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) have seen much higher admission rates. BCom has filled 63% of its seats with 19,405 students, while 60% of BA seats have been filled, totaling 10,662 admissions.

Overall, across six major undergraduate programs at Gujarat University, around 58% of the 65,269 available seats have been filled. Some other programs are showing better admission rates. For example, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) has a confirmation rate of 66.81%. Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) also has a solid rate of 61.84%, and integrated courses have seen 61.52% of their seats filled.

**Engineering Shift Affects BSc Admissions**

Experts point out that the decline in interest for core science courses is not a new issue. Jatin Parikh, the in-charge principal of MG Science College, highlighted the worrying trend. He noted that there is a significant decrease in admissions from students in Group A (Mathematics). The increase in engineering seats has allowed even those who score as low as 50% in Class 12 Science to secure spots in engineering programs. This shift has led to a reduced interest in BSc programs.

Additionally, students from Group B (Biology stream) are increasingly leaning towards fields such as medical studies, paramedical courses, and newer areas like biotechnology and agriculture. This shift in preference is further contributing to the declining BSc admissions.

**Confusion Due to GCAS Portal**

Another factor affecting BSc admissions is the GCAS portal, which manages admissions across 15 universities. An official from Gujarat University’s admission committee pointed out that students often receive offers from multiple institutions. Many students fail to confirm their admission at a single college, do not pay the required fees, or simply do not attend classes. This situation creates significant gaps in final enrollment numbers, especially in traditional science streams like BSc.

The centralized admission system, which was designed to simplify the process, has instead caused confusion and delays. This has negatively impacted the enrollment numbers for science courses.

**Conclusion**

The trend of declining interest in BSc courses at Gujarat University raises concerns about the future of scientific education in the region. As students increasingly choose engineering and medical fields, traditional science programs may continue to struggle. It is crucial for the university to address these challenges to attract more students to its BSc courses in the coming years. The university may need to reassess its offerings and marketing strategies to better appeal to prospective students.

In conclusion, while Gujarat University has a rich history and a strong reputation, it must adapt to changing student preferences. By doing so, it can ensure that its science programs remain robust and continue to provide quality education in the important field of science.
