On July 13, 2025, Gujarat hosted its second National Lok Adalat, a special court system designed to resolve disputes quickly. A remarkable 18,003,231 cases were presented, and approximately 11,690,083 cases were resolved. This event was led by Chief Justice Sunita Ben Agrawal of the Gujarat High Court, who inspired the process. Senior Justice A.Y. Kogje also played a significant role in the proceedings.
The Lok Adalat focused on various types of cases, including pre-litigation disputes, marital issues, and even cases that had been pending for over a decade. Despite the high number of resolved cases, not every case reached a conclusion, highlighting the complexity of legal issues.
In total, 794,486 pre-litigation cases were resolved, alongside 3,993 marital dispute cases. An impressive 4,19,597 cases were resolved through special sittings. The Lok Adalat also facilitated settlements amounting to ₹112.37 crores, with 844 cases that had been lingering for ten years finally finding resolution.
Moreover, the Judicial Magistrate Court addressed around 2,860 additional cases. The Lok Adalat’s achievements are significant, with settlements totalling ₹11,188 crores. The purpose of a Lok Adalat is to ensure that no one loses and everyone leaves with a resolution, often with smiles.
The event was not just about resolving disputes. It was also aimed at raising awareness about the importance of legal support and the role of mediation in reducing case backlogs. The Gujarat High Court’s Justices J.N. Bhatt and P.P. Bhatt, known for their proactive roles in the legal system, were also pivotal in promoting the Lok Adalat initiatives.
The concept of Lok Adalat is to provide a platform where disputes can be settled amicably, without the traditional adversarial court process. This approach is beneficial, as it reduces the backlog in courts and brings justice closer to the people.
The Supreme Court has highlighted the need for structural facilities to expedite case resolutions. The Lok Adalat serves as a practical solution to the growing number of pending cases in India. As the former Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati emphasized, everyone deserves a fair chance to present their case, and the legal system should be accessible to all.
In summary, the second National Lok Adalat in Gujarat was a resounding success. The high number of resolved cases demonstrates the effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution methods. It is a step towards a more efficient and accessible legal system in India. The ongoing efforts by the judiciary to streamline processes and support litigants reflect a commitment to justice for all. It is crucial for the legal community to continue promoting such initiatives and to ensure that everyone has access to legal resources. The Lok Adalat not only resolves disputes but also fosters a sense of community and cooperation among the citizens of Gujarat.
