Micron’s Semiconductor Plant in Sanand Nears Completion

Micron Technology, a US-based semiconductor company, is building a major plant in Sanand, Gujarat. This facility is almost ready, with production expected to start by late 2025.

The plant will focus on producing chips for RAM and NAND memory. It is part of India’s push to become a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing. The project was approved in June 2023 under the Central government’s semiconductor mission, with an investment of ₹22,516 crore.

Currently, work is progressing on the cleanroom inside the facility, which spans 5 lakh square feet. This area is crucial for assembling, testing, and packaging the chipsets. Tata Group is in charge of building the first phase of the plant. They have reported that about 70% of the construction is complete. After this phase, Tata will hand over the site to Micron, allowing production to start.

Initially, the plant was scheduled to be finished in 2024, but delays pushed the timeline back. Now, production is expected to begin in December 2025 or January 2026. This plant is significant as it is the first project approved under the Central government’s semiconductor mission, aimed at reducing India’s reliance on imports.

The facility is expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs, which will greatly benefit the local economy. It also marks a step forward for India’s technological capabilities in the semiconductor sector.

Micron has begun inviting bids for the construction of the second phase of the plant. This indicates their commitment to expand operations in India, which is vital for the country’s ambitions to enhance its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

The establishment of this plant aligns with India’s broader goals under initiatives like Make in India. It aims to establish the country as a key player in the global semiconductor market, which is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030.

Micron’s investment in the Sanand facility reflects its strategy to diversify manufacturing and reduce dependence on global supply chains. The recent global semiconductor shortages have highlighted the importance of local production. By setting up this plant, Micron helps strengthen India’s supply chain resilience.

As of now, the project is on track to become operational soon. The work being done by Tata Projects is crucial to this timeline. The completion of this facility will not only boost job creation but also enhance India’s position in the global semiconductor landscape.

In conclusion, Micron’s semiconductor plant in Sanand is a landmark project for India. It promises to create jobs, advance technology, and reduce import dependency. As we approach late 2025, all eyes will be on this facility as it begins production and contributes to India’s growth in the tech sector.
