A 25-year-old man, accused of murder, took part in the Gujarat University PhD entrance exam on Tuesday. He is a resident of Muliya in Surendranagar district and holds a First Class Gold Medal in MSc-IT. The court granted him partial bail to attend the exam. As per the court’s order, he was escorted to the university’s KS School of Business Management by 11 am for the exam scheduled from 12 pm to 2 pm. After the exam, he was to return to jail immediately, with all expenses paid by the government.
Gujarat University reported a high turnout for the PhD entrance exam, with 1,317 out of 1,443 registered candidates appearing. This represents a turnout of 91.26%. Interestingly, more than half of the participants were women. The university is expected to release the answer key within two days.
The examination was conducted in over 70 disciplines. However, there was no standardised question bank. Candidates wrote their answers directly on the question paper, which they had to submit. The papers were available in Gujarati for all subjects, except for medical studies. Notably, exams were not held for Journalism, Prakrit, and Urdu due to a lack of available guides.
This incident highlights the complexities surrounding education and justice in Gujarat. The young man, despite facing serious charges, was able to demonstrate his commitment to education by participating in this important exam. This raises questions about the balance between legal issues and the right to education, especially for young people in challenging situations.
As the education system evolves, it is important to ensure that individuals facing legal challenges still have access to educational opportunities. The case of this gold medallist serves as a reminder of the need for compassion and understanding in the face of difficult circumstances. It also showcases the importance of educational institutions in providing a platform for learning, regardless of one’s background.
As the results from the PhD entrance exam are awaited, many are hopeful that the young man’s determination will lead to success, despite the obstacles he faces. His story could inspire others in similar situations to pursue their academic dreams, reinforcing the idea that education is a powerful tool for change and growth, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
