On August 7, India celebrates National Handloom Day. This day highlights the rich heritage of handloom weaving in India. In Gujarat, the state government has been proactive in supporting handloom weavers to uplift their economic status. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, various schemes have been implemented to enhance the skills and market reach of handloom cooperative societies.
As part of these efforts, the Gujarat government has introduced a package scheme that provides cash incentives to handloom cooperatives. For the year 2024-25, more than 246 handloom cooperative societies have benefited from this scheme, resulting in sales exceeding ₹290 crore. This is a significant achievement that showcases the continuous growth of the handloom sector in Gujarat.
The package scheme offers a 5% cash incentive for sales made by handloom cooperatives. For women-led cooperatives, this incentive increases to 15%. Additionally, women’s cooperatives receive extra support during festive periods, further boosting their sales potential.
The government aims to promote handloom products and ensure quality production through various transformational schemes. These initiatives include financial assistance for advertising, participation in exhibitions, and skill development training for weavers.
To help handloom products reach a wider audience, the state provides financial aid to top handloom institutions for promotional activities. These institutions can receive up to ₹70,000 for state exhibitions and ₹1,50,000 for exhibitions outside the state. Furthermore, they receive an annual budget of ₹1,00,000 for advertising and an additional ₹25,000 for participating in fairs and exhibitions. This support encourages the marketing of handloom products and enhances employment opportunities for weavers.
Another important aspect of the government’s initiative is the Mill Gate Price Scheme. This ensures that weavers produce high-quality products and receive a subsidy of 15% on yarn purchased through approved depots. Such measures are crucial for improving market value and creating more job opportunities in the sector.
The state also conducts training programs for weavers to improve their skills. These training sessions offer stipends and are aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of handloom products in the market. Collaborations with design institutions like NID and NIFT help in developing innovative products that can compete with mill and power loom products.
Moreover, marketing efforts to boost the visibility of handloom products include hoardings, kiosks, wall paintings, road shows, and fashion shows. The Gujarat government promotes these products under the ‘Garvi-Gujarati’ brand through e-commerce platforms and emporia chains.
With these initiatives, the Gujarat government is demonstrating its commitment to the handloom sector and its weavers. The financial assistance of ₹73.82 crore provided to cooperative societies in 2024-25 is a clear indication of the government’s dedication to uplifting the livelihoods of handloom weavers.
The celebration of National Handloom Day serves as a reminder of the cultural and economic importance of handloom weaving in India. It is a day to honour the skilled artisans who contribute to this traditional industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need for the government to provide weavers with access to the largest markets in the world, ensuring their hard work and craftsmanship are recognised on a global scale.
