Employees in Gujarat will soon have a new way to access their Provident Fund (PF) savings. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that workers can withdraw their PF money directly from ATMs. This change aims to make it easier for employees to access their savings, especially during emergencies. The government has also raised the automatic advance withdrawal limit from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This means that workers can now withdraw larger amounts without needing to fill out complex forms.
The new system will allow employees to select their PF account at ATMs, similar to how they access their savings accounts. This is a significant shift that removes the need for a formal request to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Mandaviya stated, “With the elevated limit of ₹5 lakhs, additional advance claims will now qualify for auto-settlement, leading to their processing within three days of submission.”
This new withdrawal limit came into effect recently, following an initial announcement made during an event celebrating the Modi government’s third term. The government aims to improve financial accessibility for nearly 70 million salaried Indians who rely on their PF as a primary source of retirement savings.
Once the new ATM feature is fully operational, employees will be able to withdraw funds directly at ATMs using their debit cards. This development is expected to ease financial pressures for many workers who may need quick access to cash for emergencies or other urgent needs.
An official involved in the project explained that they are still working on the necessary software integrations. The EPFO does not have a banking licence, which means it cannot allow direct withdrawals from PF funds. However, the goal is to integrate PF accounts with bank systems to enable these transactions through ATMs and UPI payments.
For employees, this means less hassle when accessing their funds. Previously, they had to go through a lengthy process, often requiring approvals and paperwork. Now, with the new system, the aim is to simplify these processes.
“Once the ATM feature becomes operational, subscribers won’t need to fill out different forms and apply for advances. The ATM will automatically allow direct withdrawal as per eligibility,” Mandaviya added. This change is part of a broader effort to modernise the EPFO, which has faced criticism over its complicated procedures.
The EPFO has also made significant strides in its online services. Now, employees can manage their PF accounts and make withdrawals online without employer verification in many cases. They need to ensure their Aadhaar and UAN are linked to benefit from these services.
The EPFO is responsible for the management of PF accounts in India, where both employees and employers contribute a portion of the employee’s salary to the fund. This fund serves as a crucial financial safety net for workers, allowing them to save for retirement and access funds in emergencies.
Despite these improvements, employees are advised to use their PF withdrawals judiciously. Frequent withdrawals can reduce the total amount saved for retirement. The EPF is designed to help employees accumulate savings over time, providing security in their later years.
As the government continues to enhance the PF withdrawal system, employees in Gujarat can look forward to more accessible and efficient ways to manage their retirement savings. This reform represents a significant step toward improving financial security for millions of workers in the region and across India.
