NHAI to Launch FASTag Annual Pass on Independence Day

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to launch the FASTag Annual Pass on August 15. This new scheme will help make highway travel easier and cheaper for people who frequently use their private vehicles. The pass is designed for cars, jeeps, and vans and allows for up to 200 toll crossings or one year of travel, depending on which limit is reached first. Users will pay a one-time fee of ₹3,000 for this service. This initiative aims to reduce the hassle of recharging FASTags and speed up toll transactions, making travel smoother.

The FASTag Annual Pass was first announced in June. It is exclusively for non-commercial vehicles and will be linked to the existing FASTag registered to the vehicle. This pass can only be used at toll plazas on national highways and expressways managed by the NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, this initiative will simplify payments and reduce wait times at tolls.

To purchase the FASTag Annual Pass, motorists can use the Rajmarg Yatra app or the NHAI and MoRTH websites. They need to log in with their vehicle number and FASTag ID. It is important to ensure that the FASTag is active and properly installed. Payments can be made via UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking. Once the pass is activated on August 15, users will receive an SMS confirmation.

The pass will work only on NHAI-operated highways and expressways. These include popular routes like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Mumbai-Nashik. However, it does not cover state highways or municipal toll roads, where regular FASTag rates will apply. For example, users will still pay regular fees on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Each toll crossing under NHAI will count as one trip, and once users reach 200 trips or the one-year limit, the system will revert to pay-per-use mode. The pass will not automatically renew, so users must apply for a new one after expiration.

This annual pass is a significant step for frequent highway travellers. It replaces the need for regular top-ups with a single payment, similar to a season ticket. The pass allows unlimited commutes without the worry of constantly adding money to their FASTag accounts.

However, for those who do not travel often on highways, this pass may not be the best option. Users should consider their yearly toll usage before deciding to buy the pass. Nitin Gadkari describes this initiative as transformative, aimed at easing travel for private vehicle owners.

Overall, the FASTag Annual Pass is expected to benefit millions of frequent travellers by reducing toll expenses and making travel more convenient. It is a timely solution for those who frequently drive along India’s national highways, providing a practical and cost-effective way to navigate tolls.
