The National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad has prepared special invitation kits for guests at Rashtrapati Bhavan. These kits celebrate the artistic and cultural heritage of Eastern India. The NID director, Dr. Ashok Mondal, expressed pride in this achievement. The kits will be sent out for the 79th Independence Day celebration on August 15, 2025.
These invitation kits are designed to showcase the rich traditional crafts from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. Dr. Mondal shared that the theme focuses on the artistic heritage of Eastern India. After four months of detailed research and hard work, the team included various art forms in the kits.
One unique item in the kit is a beautifully woven box made of ‘sikki’ grass from Bihar. This handcrafted box is made by rural women artisans using golden-hued grass. Additionally, there is a bamboo photo frame from Jharkhand, featuring artwork by tribal artisans. The frame highlights the intricate Madhubani art style.
The kits also include hand-woven silk stoles adorned with local designs, such as fish, lotus, and spring motifs. These stoles are decorated with vibrant colours, including the tri-colour of the Indian flag. The invitation kits reflect the vibrant traditions and creative expressions of the region.
Dr. Mondal noted that the NID Bangalore campus, led by Dean C.S. Susanth, also played an important role in coordinating this project. This collaboration highlights the innovation and creativity of Indian design education.
Through these invitation kits, NID Ahmedabad aims to promote the rich culture and traditions of Eastern India, showcasing the skills of local artisans and bringing their work to a national platform. This event marks a significant moment for the institute and the artisans involved.
The kits serve not only as invitations but also as a celebration of India’s diverse heritage. Each item tells a story of craftsmanship and cultural significance, making them a meaningful gift for esteemed guests at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, these kits remind us of the importance of preserving and promoting our cultural identity. The art forms included are a testament to the creativity and skill of artisans across the country, demonstrating the power of design in connecting people with their heritage.
NID Ahmedabad continues to lead in design education, fostering innovation and creativity while paying homage to traditional crafts. This project exemplifies the institute’s commitment to promoting cultural awareness and supporting local artisans. The invitation kits will not only serve their purpose for the independence celebrations but also inspire pride in India’s rich artistic legacy.
