Nirma University Students Explore Stepwells in Ahmedabad

The Institute of Architecture & Planning at Nirma University has launched an exciting programme for its students. The initiative, called ‘Reimagining Ahmedabad’s Stepwells as Living Public Spaces’, took place over two weeks. During this time, 42 undergraduate students engaged in hands-on fieldwork, focusing on the historic stepwells of Ahmedabad.

Stepwells are unique structures found in India. They were built to access water in dry regions. Unfortunately, many are now neglected. This programme aimed to bring attention to these important sites and encourage sustainable practices in urban design.

Students were divided into seven interdisciplinary groups. Each group had a specific stepwell to study. They explored well-known sites like Dada/Bai Harir ni Vav and Ashapura Mata ni Vav, as well as lesser-known gems hidden in various neighbourhoods.

Guided by their professors, Prof. Pooja Raval and Prof. Nishant Kansagra, the students documented their findings. They took photographs, created sketches, and wrote reports on each site. This thorough documentation was essential for their redesign proposals.

The students also held discussions on the importance of stepwells in the urban landscape. They considered how these sites could be revitalised. Ideas included creating community spaces around the wells, where local events could take place. This would help to engage the public and promote a sense of community.

The initiative was not just about learning architecture. It also emphasised public engagement and sustainability. The students learned to appreciate the cultural significance of these structures. Many stepwells have historical and architectural value that is often overlooked.

As part of their project, students presented their designs to their peers and faculty. These presentations showcased innovative ideas for making stepwells more accessible and enjoyable for the public. Some designs included seating areas, gardens, and pathways to connect the stepwells to nearby neighbourhoods.

The programme aligns with the broader mission of the Institute of Architecture and Planning. Established in 2014, the institute aims to provide high-quality education in architecture and planning. It focuses on integrating technology, sustainability, and social responsibility in its curriculum.

The institute has received recognition for its commitment to education and research. It is ranked among the top architecture colleges in India. This field project is a perfect example of how students can apply their learning in real-world scenarios.

Overall, the ‘Reimagining Ahmedabad’s Stepwells as Living Public Spaces’ programme has been a success. It has provided students with practical experience and raised awareness about the importance of preserving and revitalising Ahmedabad’s unique water heritage. By engaging with the community, students are helping to ensure that these historic sites are valued and maintained for future generations.

In conclusion, the initiative at Nirma University highlights the crucial role that architecture and planning play in our society. With projects like these, students are encouraged to think creatively and consider how their work can positively impact their communities. The future of Ahmedabad’s stepwells looks promising, thanks to the efforts of these dedicated students.
