Online Food Orders Cost More Than Eating Out in Ahmedabad

Ordering food online from popular restaurants in Ahmedabad is getting more expensive. A recent survey shows that online prices can be up to 58% higher than dining in. This does not include delivery charges and taxes, which can add even more to the final cost.

The survey was conducted by the Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC). They looked at prices from eight different restaurants. The results showed that many restaurants are marking up prices for online orders. This practice has been called ‘unfair’ by consumer rights group, Grahak Sathi.

The price difference can be significant. Anusha Iyer, Deputy General Manager at CERC, noted that the base price for the same dish can increase by Rs 20 to Rs 110 on food delivery apps. Depending on the restaurant and the dish, the price can be 10% to 58% higher.

It’s important to understand why this is happening. Restaurants often pass on the costs they incur from delivery platforms to customers. They justify this by saying they need to maintain food quality. But CERC argues that this reasoning is flawed. When customers dine in, restaurants have to pay for rent, staff salaries, and ambiance. However, these costs do not apply to online orders, which should theoretically cost less.

Despite this, consumers are often paying more for the same food when they order online. This shifts the burden of costs from the restaurant to the consumer. CERC highlights that this practice violates basic consumer rights.

The convenience of ordering online is appealing, especially for busy individuals. Many people enjoy the ease of having food delivered right to their door. However, this convenience comes at a price. The final bill often includes a platform fee, delivery charges, and taxes. This can make a meal much more expensive than expected.

As a result, many consumers may not be aware of the true costs of online food ordering. This can lead to overspending and financial strain. It is essential for consumers to be informed about these price differences. They may want to consider dining in more often to save money.

The report has sparked discussions about fair pricing in the food delivery industry. Some consumers may feel frustrated by the inflated prices for online orders. They may start to question the value of the convenience offered by these services.

In conclusion, while ordering food online can be convenient, it often comes with higher costs. Consumers in Ahmedabad should be aware of these price differences. They may want to explore their options and consider dining in to save money.
