Palanpur Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape of Minor

In a recent case from Palanpur, Gujarat, a man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of a minor girl. This decision was made by a special court that deals with such cases. The crime occurred in April 2024 when the victim, aged just 12 years and 6 months, was lured away by the accused, Sureshji Pradhanji Labelia, who is related to the girl’s guardian. The girl was sitting at a local parlour when Labelia approached her. He told her he was going to pick up her aunt and persuaded her to come along. Instead, he abducted her and took her away in a CNG autorickshaw.

Once he had taken the girl to a remote village near Kheralu, Labelia committed the crime multiple times. The girl’s guardian reported the incident to the police after she managed to escape and return home. The police registered a complaint under several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with other relevant laws.

The trial was presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Amit J. Kanani. During the proceedings, the prosecution, represented by Public Prosecutor Dinesh Kumar H. Chhapiya, presented strong evidence and testimonies against Labelia. The court took into account these evidences and found the accused guilty.

Labelia was given a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence under the POCSO Act. In addition to this, he received separate sentences of 5 years and 7 years for kidnapping and other related charges, which will run concurrently with the 20-year sentence. The court also imposed fines totaling Rs. 11,000 on him. This verdict highlights the judiciary’s commitment to protecting children from sexual offences and ensuring justice for victims.

The case has drawn significant attention in the local media, raising awareness about the issues surrounding child safety in the region. Many community leaders have called for stronger measures to protect minors and to educate families about the dangers of child abduction and abuse. They stress the importance of vigilance and communication within families to safeguard children.

Palanpur, located in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, has a history that dates back centuries. It is known for its cultural heritage and historical significance. However, like many regions, it faces challenges related to crime and safety, particularly concerning vulnerable populations such as children.

Local authorities are now under pressure to increase safety measures in public places and to implement educational programs aimed at parents and children alike. The goal is to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. More community support programs are being discussed to help families understand how to protect their children from potential threats.

As the legal proceedings conclude, the community reflects on the importance of vigilance and support for victims and their families. Advocacy groups are also calling for continued support for child protection laws and resources to assist victims of abuse in their recovery. The case serves as a critical reminder of the work that still needs to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of children in Palanpur and beyond.
