Gandhinagar, Gujarat – The number of pending cases in courts across Gujarat has reached a staggering 16.48 lakh. This includes 1.74 lakh cases pending in the Gujarat High Court alone. Many litigants have expressed frustration over delays, with some cases taking years to resolve.
The backlog of cases is not unique to Gujarat; it reflects a nationwide issue affecting various states. Despite efforts from the government and the judiciary to expedite case resolutions, the burden on the justice system remains heavy.
According to a recent report submitted by the Ministry of Law and Justice in Parliament, there are currently 86,844 cases pending in the Supreme Court and 63,32,256 cases in high courts across the country. For Gujarat, the total stands at 18,23,329 pending cases when combined with the lower courts.
In an effort to tackle the issue, Gujarat has established 35 Fast Track Special Courts, particularly for cases involving sexual offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Since their establishment, these courts have received 21,931 cases, with 16,616 cases resolved by June 2025.
The average time for resolving a rape case in Gujarat is about 1,716 days, while POCSO cases take an average of 869 days. Comparatively, in Madhya Pradesh, a rape case takes around 365 days to resolve, while in Himachal Pradesh, it takes about 407 days.
The judiciary and government are aware of the pressing need to reduce these delays. Initiatives such as Lok Adalats (people’s courts) are being used to resolve cases more quickly. However, the ongoing backlog indicates that more needs to be done to improve the efficiency of the legal process in Gujarat and across India.
As the situation stands, the public is left waiting for justice, with many cases remaining unresolved for years. This challenge highlights the need for judicial reforms to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the court system in Gujarat and beyond.
In summary, the situation of pending court cases in Gujarat is a pressing concern. The establishment of Fast Track Courts is a step in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go to ensure timely justice for all citizens.
