Mehsana experienced a refreshing rain shower on Sunday evening, bringing relief from the scorching heat. The city had been facing extreme heat and humidity for days, following a previous rainfall two days ago. Residents welcomed the rain as it cooled down the sweltering temperatures, which had reached a steady 37 degrees Celsius.
The rain arrived in the Mehsana city division just as many were struggling with the heat. While the temperature did not see a significant drop in the last 24 hours, cloud cover was visible early in the morning. This cloud cover hinted at the possibility of rain. Following the rain, there was a noticeable reduction in the high humidity that had been a constant complaint among the citizens.
Despite the rain, the weather department forecasts no major changes in the maximum temperature over the next week. This means residents should prepare themselves for continued high temperatures in the coming days. The market areas were unusually quiet by 11 am, as people preferred to stay indoors during the heat.
The weather department also indicated that several districts in Gujarat might receive rainfall. Mehsana district saw widespread rainfall, which was accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. This brought some much-needed relief from the harsh summer heat. However, the rain also caused some issues. In rural areas, crops such as millet were damaged due to strong winds and heavy rain.
In particular, the villages around Timba in Satlasna taluka reported damage to standing crops. Farmers are now discussing the need for government assistance to recover from these losses, which are significant due to the sudden weather changes.
Furthermore, there were reports of damage to infrastructure. In Nagarasan village, the roof of a dilapidated bus stand collapsed due to the heavy rain and winds. In Pirajpur village, lightning struck and damaged a house, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
Overall, while the rain has brought some relief from the heat, it has also caused concerns about crop damage and infrastructure safety. The weather department’s yellow alert indicates the possibility of moderate rain across various regions, including Mehsana, Banaskantha, and Sabarkantha.
Looking ahead, the weather experts predict that while rainfall will be less frequent over the next week, some areas might still experience sporadic showers. Heavy rain is expected from August 22 to August 30, with warnings of possible extreme rainfall in some locations. Citizens are advised to remain cautious and prepared for any sudden weather changes that may come their way.
