RBI Introduces Faster Cheque Clearance from October 2025

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to change how cheques are processed in India, starting October 4, 2025. This new system will clear cheques within hours, a significant improvement from the current waiting time of up to two working days. Under the new system, cheques will be scanned and settled continuously during business hours, instead of being processed in batches.

Currently, the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) can take up to two working days to process cheques. This means that if you deposit a cheque, you might have to wait several days before the funds are available. With the new system, that wait will be reduced to just a few hours.

The RBI aims to enhance customer convenience and reduce risks for banks by moving to a quicker, real-time cheque processing method. This change is part of a broader effort to modernise the banking system and improve overall efficiency.

The rollout will happen in two phases. Phase 1 begins on October 4, 2025, and lasts until January 2, 2026. During this phase, banks must confirm whether they will honour cheques by 7 PM on the same day they are presented. If they do not respond by this time, the cheque will be automatically considered approved.

Cheques will be processed between 10 AM and 4 PM each day. This means that if you deposit a cheque in the morning, you can expect to know if it has been honoured by the evening.

In Phase 2, starting January 3, 2026, the rules will become even stricter. Cheques must be confirmed within three hours of being deposited. For example, if you deposit a cheque at 11 AM, it needs to be confirmed by 2 PM. Again, if the bank does not respond in time, the cheque will be treated as approved.

This new system is designed to make cheque transactions faster and more user-friendly. Customers will benefit from quicker access to their funds, aligning cheque processing more closely with the speed of digital payments. The RBI has also instructed banks to prepare their systems and educate customers about these changes.

The continuous cheque clearing system is expected to significantly reduce the delays that have been common with traditional cheque processing. It will also help banks manage risks better by ensuring that they deal with cheque clearances more promptly.

As the implementation dates approach, banks are urged to ensure that their systems are ready for this new way of processing cheques. Customers should also be prepared for these changes and understand how they will affect their banking transactions. This initiative marks a major step forward in the evolution of the banking sector in India, aiming to make it more efficient and customer-friendly.
