Rupalben Rathod is a remarkable woman from Gujarat who has dedicated her life to helping young girls in need. Despite not having any daughters of her own, she delivers free sanitary pads to over one thousand girls every month. Her journey began with a small initiative called Project Muskaan, which was started by the Mangopipal family in a slum area. For the past twelve years, they have provided free education to children living in these areas. Rupalben also personally visits these slums to gather children for primary education and nutritious snacks.
About a year and a half ago, Rupalben noticed that some girls stopped attending classes. Concerned, she inquired and found that they were at home because they had started their periods. This discovery deeply troubled her. She went to visit these girls and learned that their mothers were hesitant to allow them to attend class during their menstrual cycle.
Rupalben’s determination led her to take immediate action. She called for sanitary pads and spent about thirty minutes educating the girls and their mothers about menstrual health and hygiene. The girls accepted the pads gratefully and returned to class the next day with smiles on their faces. This sparked an idea in Rupalben’s mind.
On her birthday, July 24, she launched Project Muskaan, focusing on educating and distributing sanitary pads to girls in slum areas. She faced initial challenges in gathering girls and providing them with knowledge about menstrual health, but with the support of her husband, Manishbhai Rathod, she overcame these hurdles. He assisted her in packaging the pads and arranging transportation for the distribution.
Over the years, Project Muskaan has expanded its reach. Rupalben and her team have managed to distribute free sanitary pads not just in Rajkot, but also in Jamnagar, Wankaner, Morbi, and many smaller villages like Drol, Jodiya, and Bhalamba. The project has been active for eight years and has now included the distribution of free undergarments along with the sanitary pads. As of now, more than one thousand girls benefit from this initiative every month.
Rupalben’s efforts have created a positive impact in the community. The girls feel empowered and are able to attend school without the fear of embarrassment or discomfort during their periods. Rupalben encourages everyone to participate in this noble cause, reminding them that they can be a reason for someone’s smile. Her passion and commitment to helping girls in need have made her a true role model in her community.
