The Sanskrit language is gaining popularity in Gujarat, thanks to efforts by both the central and state governments. To celebrate World Sanskrit Day, events took place across the state from August 6 to August 8. One of the main highlights was the ‘Sanskrit Glory Yatra,’ organized by the Banaskantha Sanskrit Education Family. This journey started from the Deesa Arbuda Vidyalaya and ended at Sardar Bagh.
The district education officer, Dr. Hitesh Patel, was present during the event. He performed a ritual with the four Vedas and officially launched the Glory Yatra with a conch shell sound. The event included various activities, showcasing the beauty of the Sanskrit language and its cultural significance.
During the yatra, students presented tableaux that depicted Vedic culture and rituals. Many students dressed as mythological characters such as Ram, Lakshman, Janaki, Narad Muni, Arjun, and Krishna. This was a way to represent Indian culture and its rich heritage.
At the end of the Sanskrit Glory Yatra at Sardar Bagh, Dr. Hitesh Patel spoke about the importance of Sanskrit in today’s world. He emphasized its role in education and its need for promotion. Students also participated actively by holding banners with messages like ‘Sanskrit Language, Easy Language,’ ‘Truth, Goodness, Beauty,’ and ‘The Soul of the Nation is the Sanskrit Language.’ These slogans aimed to highlight the connection between Sanskrit and culture.
The event also featured Sanskrit shlokas and songs, promoting the language further. Many principals from schools, teachers who teach Sanskrit, volunteers, and a large number of students attended the event. This initiative shows a strong desire to revive and popularize the Sanskrit language among the younger generation.
Moreover, recent statistics indicate that 48% of students in Gujarat choose Sanskrit as a subject in their SSC examinations. Out of 7,62,485 regular students, approximately 3,67,666 opted for Sanskrit, achieving a pass rate of 97%. However, there is a growing concern that despite this interest, Sanskrit is often sidelined in higher education.
The Sanskrit Glory Yatra is a significant step towards revitalizing interest in this ancient language. It aims to inspire students and the community to appreciate the rich heritage and wisdom that Sanskrit offers. Events like these play a vital role in ensuring that the language does not fade away and continues to thrive in modern society. It is a reminder of the cultural roots and the importance of preserving linguistic diversity. With ongoing support and enthusiasm, Sanskrit can regain its prominent place in education and society.
