In a significant move, sixteen teachers from private schools in Gujarat have resigned after being caught offering private tuition. This action comes in response to a government resolution that prohibits teachers from conducting private classes outside school hours. An investigation was launched following a formal complaint submitted by the Federation of Academic Associations (FAA). The complaint led to the District Education Officers (DEOs) of Ahmedabad City and Rural conducting a probe into the matter.
The investigation revealed that teachers from various schools were indeed providing coaching sessions after school. As a result, the DEOs issued a circular to all schools in their jurisdictions, instructing them to identify teachers involved in private tutoring. They warned that schools could face consequences if any violations were found. For grant-in-aid schools, the government even indicated that funding could be revoked if teachers were found breaking the rules.
The FAA provided a list of over forty teachers suspected of offering private tuition. It was discovered that five teachers from city schools and eleven from rural schools were giving private lessons. This led to their resignations from their teaching positions. Schools such as Arjun English School, Mission School, and Mahavir High School in the city, along with S S Divine and Ambika schools in rural areas, were involved in the investigation.
The management of these schools accepted the resignations of the implicated teachers. Interestingly, while the FAA’s list included several teachers from grant-in-aid schools, so far, only those from private institutions have faced disciplinary action. This has raised questions about fairness in the enforcement of the ban.
The crackdown on private tuition is part of a broader initiative by the Gujarat government to uphold educational standards. The DEOs are conducting surprise inspections to ensure compliance with the rules. School authorities are urged to cooperate fully with these inspections to avoid any penalties.
The situation highlights the ongoing challenges within the education system in Gujarat. The balance between teachers’ rights to earn additional income and the need to maintain educational integrity is a delicate one. Many parents and educational bodies support the government’s stance against private tuition, believing it can lead to unfair advantages for students who can afford extra classes. The government’s efforts aim to create a level playing field for all students.
The issue of private tuition has sparked debate among educators and parents alike. Some argue that teachers need the extra income, especially in light of recent financial challenges faced by schools and educators. Others contend that private tuition undermines the quality of education provided during school hours.
As the investigation continues, the DEOs remain committed to enforcing the rules strictly. They urge parents to report any teachers engaging in private tutoring to ensure accountability and adherence to educational standards. The fallout from this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regulations in maintaining the integrity of the educational system in Gujarat.
