In a significant move for higher education, students in Gujarat will now have the opportunity to study at two colleges simultaneously. This decision comes two years after the formal implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) in Gujarat. The Gujarat University has made it clear that students enrolled in undergraduate (UG) courses for the fifth and sixth semesters can choose minor subjects from other colleges. However, major and minor subjects cannot be the same. This new flexibility allows students to enhance their learning experience by selecting subjects that align with their interests, even if those subjects are not offered at their home college.

Gujarat University has communicated this change to all faculty deans and members of the Board of Studies through an official circular. According to the guidelines, the major and minor subjects offered by different colleges should not be identical. This means students will have diverse options to choose from, promoting a more enriched educational experience.

Moreover, students can choose their minor subjects based on their personal preferences. The minor subject can remain the same until semester six or can be changed after semester three. Various faculties, including Arts, Commerce, Science, BBA, BCA, and Journalism, will now offer minor subjects from the NEP basket, enabling students to select according to their academic goals.

If a college does not offer a student’s preferred minor subject, the student may seek approval from their home college’s principal. With this approval, they can earn the necessary credits by attending classes in their chosen minor subject at another accredited institution. However, it is essential for students to complete their credit requirements at their original college before filling out their examination forms.

This initiative is expected to significantly benefit students by allowing them to tailor their education to their interests and career aspirations. It encourages a more holistic approach to learning and helps in building a diverse skill set, which is crucial in today’s competitive job market.

The introduction of this dual-college system aligns with the broader objectives of the NEP, which aims to make education more flexible and responsive to the needs of students. By providing students with the freedom to explore different subjects and institutions, Gujarat University is taking a progressive step towards enhancing the quality of higher education in the state.

Students and educators have welcomed this initiative, seeing it as a way to foster a culture of interdisciplinary learning. This change is likely to create a more vibrant academic environment where students can engage with a wider range of ideas and perspectives.

As Gujarat continues to adapt and evolve its educational policies, this new provision will play a vital role in shaping the future of higher education in the region. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to broaden their educational horizons and develop a more comprehensive understanding of their fields of study.
