Surat Schools Embrace Smart Education with AI and Technology

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Surat Municipal Corporation has launched a pilot project to integrate smart education in 18 of its Sumangali schools. This project aims to equip students from grades 9 to 12 with knowledge in advanced technologies such as 3D printing, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and drone technology. The pilot project is set to begin in January 2025 and marks a significant step forward in Gujarat’s educational landscape.

Surat is the first city in India to implement such a comprehensive technology-based education program in municipal schools. The initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to modernising education by prioritising smart learning in accordance with the new educational policy. During the first phase, students will receive free technical education in AI labs, with over 11,000 students benefiting from this initiative.

Students at the Sumangali schools are already engaging with cutting-edge technologies. They are learning about front-end development and drone aviation, participating in practical sessions in robotics labs, and gaining hands-on experience with AI. This approach not only complements their regular curriculum but also prepares them for a future where technology plays a crucial role.

The Sumangali schools aim to make technical education accessible, particularly to students from middle-class families. The municipal commissioner, Shalini Agarwal, emphasised that the goal is to ensure that students are not limited to traditional learning but are also exposed to advanced fields like AI, robotics, and 3D technology.

Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, inaugurated AI labs in 12 Sumangali schools, enhancing the learning environment for over 11,000 students. The aim is to produce not just job seekers but also innovators and entrepreneurs who can contribute to the city’s economic growth.

Students from these schools have already participated in state and national competitions, with 34 students selected at the national level, showcasing the program’s success. The initiative is not just about learning technology; it is about transforming the educational landscape to produce skilled, tech-savvy individuals ready to take on modern challenges.

The curriculum includes various subjects related to AI, design thinking, and STEM education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future opportunities. Students like Dhanashree Kohli, who studies in grade 10, expressed pride in receiving free technological education and aims to serve the nation after clearing prestigious exams like UPSC.

Another student, Jayesh Chauhan, highlighted the practical applications of technology in fields such as defence, healthcare, manufacturing, and gaming. He noted that the education they are receiving is not just theoretical but practical, allowing them to apply their knowledge effectively.

The Surat Municipal Corporation is leading the way in innovative education, setting a model for other regions. The integration of technology in education is essential, and this initiative is a step towards ensuring that students are equipped with the skills necessary for the future job market.

Overall, the pilot project in Surat’s Sumangali schools is an inspiring example of how local governments can embrace technology to enhance educational outcomes. By focusing on smart education, Surat is not just preparing its students for the future; it is also investing in the future of the city and the nation.
