Tesla Launches in India with First Showroom in Mumbai

Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai. Located in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, the showroom was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Along with the showroom, Tesla introduced its Model Y electric SUV, which is priced starting at ₹60 lakh. This launch marks a significant moment for Tesla, as it becomes the first vehicle from the company available in India.

The new showroom will not only serve as a display area but will also include a service centre and a warehouse to support Indian customers. The service centre will be located at Lodha Logistics Park in Sakinaka. Fadnavis described the launch as a statement showing that Tesla has chosen the right city for its operations. He highlighted Mumbai as the financial, entertainment, and entrepreneurial capital of India.

Tesla has also received a trade certificate from the Andheri Regional Transport Office (RTO). This certificate allows Tesla to use unregistered vehicles for test drives, exhibitions, and deliveries. RTO officials confirmed that the five-year certificate was issued recently, enabling Tesla to engage with customers before the official delivery of vehicles.

In addition to the Mumbai showroom, Tesla plans to open a second showroom in Delhi. The new outlet will be located in Aerocity, near Indira Gandhi International Airport. This showroom will occupy a space of 4,000 square feet and is expected to have a monthly rent of ₹25 lakh.

The Model Y is a mass-market electric SUV that will be available in both rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive variants. Initially, these vehicles will be imported and sold through Tesla’s experience centres. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister shared his first experience with Tesla during a 2015 visit to the United States. He noted that it took a decade for Tesla to reach India, and he expressed optimism about the opportunities in the Indian electric vehicle market.

Tesla’s entry into India comes at a time when the electric vehicle sector is rapidly growing. Several states are rolling out policies to encourage the use of electric vehicles, aiming to increase the share of EVs in the market. Initially, Tesla is focusing on assessing market demand and understanding consumer preferences before making decisions on further expansion or local manufacturing.

The Model Y aims to cater to the luxury segment of the Indian automotive market. Tesla’s entry is expected to increase competition, particularly with German luxury carmakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. While the luxury car market currently accounts for only about 1% of total vehicle sales in India, Tesla’s world-class technology could help drive innovation in the country’s automotive sector.

Despite the higher price point of the Model Y, its arrival signifies growing investor confidence in India. The government of India aims to boost the electric vehicle market share to 30% by 2030, and Tesla’s presence could play a crucial role in achieving that goal.

While the initial launch focuses on imported vehicles, Tesla’s long-term plans may include local manufacturing. However, the company has previously expressed concerns about high import taxes. The Indian government recently reduced import taxes for electric vehicles priced under $35,000, creating a more favourable environment for Tesla and other EV manufacturers.

Overall, Tesla’s launch in India represents a significant step towards clean mobility and a promising future for electric vehicles in the country. With the excitement surrounding the Model Y and Tesla’s commitment to understanding the Indian market, the future looks bright for both Tesla and Indian consumers interested in electric vehicles.
