The construction of a new T-shaped overbridge on Rajmahal Road in Patan is making headlines as testing has begun before its official inauguration. The Gujarat Urban Development Corporation (GUDC) initiated superstructure load testing on Wednesday. This testing is a crucial step to ensure the safety and reliability of the bridge before it opens to the public.
The overbridge features white horizontal lines and a ‘1-2-3-4’ numbering system marked on its upper surface. During the testing, access to the section leading towards the railway station was closed, while the road from the Collector’s office to Chintamani remained open. To measure the bridge’s capacity, deflection meters were placed on it. Four trucks, each weighing 132 tons, were positioned on the bridge, and load readings were taken every two hours. The testing process is expected to last for the next 24 hours.
The bridge, constructed by Rakesh Construction from Mehsana, aims to ease traffic on the busy route from Rajmahal Road to College Road. However, just a day before testing began, videos circulated on social media showing vehicles using the overbridge. This unexpected use by local citizens caught the attention of officials and residents alike, highlighting the eagerness of the community to have the bridge operational.
Despite ongoing work, including painting and finishing touches, many people were seen using the bridge, sparking discussions about its early access. The local government had invested significantly in this project, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The bridge was named after Seth Kilachand, and its opening is highly anticipated by residents.
As the testing continues, GUDC officials, including A.M. Patel, along with representatives from third-party inspection company Lasha, are closely monitoring the proceedings. The testing is essential not only for the safety of the bridge but also for the assurance of the community that it can handle the traffic it is meant to serve.
With the bridge’s opening approaching, it remains to be seen whether the bridge will be officially opened to the public before the completion of all works or if there will be a formal inauguration ceremony. The excitement in Patan is palpable as residents look forward to improved traffic flow and reduced congestion in the area. This T-shaped overbridge is a significant development for Patan, and its successful testing will mark a step forward in urban infrastructure improvements.
