Traffic Chaos in Ahmedabad as Shahibaug Overbridge Closes for Bullet Train Work

The closure of the Acharyashree Mahapragyaji Overbridge in Ahmedabad has created severe traffic problems for local residents. The bridge, situated between Namaste Circle and Rajasthan Hospital, was shut on July 31 for construction related to the bullet train project. This closure is set to last until September 1, 2025.

Ahmedabad’s bullet train corridor will connect Sabarmati to Vatva. The installation of segments for the train tracks is currently in progress near the bridge. This essential work aims to improve transport connections in the region, but it is causing significant delays for commuters.

In response to the traffic issues, Ahmedabad Police have provided alternative routes for drivers. For cars and motorcycles, the suggested route from Rajasthan Hospital to Namaste Circle is to go under the bridge, pass Shanidev Mandir, and take the Shahibaug underpass. From Namaste Circle to Rajasthan Hospital, drivers can use the road past the old Police Commissioner’s office and the Shahibaug underpass, then make a U-turn at Sardar Patel Smarak before heading to the hospital.

Heavy vehicles face different routes. Those traveling from Rajasthan Hospital to Namaste Circle are directed to go under the bridge via the service road, turn left at the crossroad, head towards Mahakali Mandir Circle, then turn right onto the Babu Jagjivan Ram Railway Overbridge.

Despite these alternative routes, traffic was still heavily impacted on the morning of the closure. Commuters reported delays of two to four times longer than usual. A journey that typically takes 5 to 7 minutes from Shahibaug to Delhi Darwaza extended to over 45 minutes due to the congestion.

This disruption has affected many people commuting from Gandhinagar and surrounding areas. Buses and private vehicles traveling via Delhi Darwaza have also faced delays. Commuters from Memco and Meghaninagar reported arriving at work nearly an hour late and experiencing similar delays on their return home.

The bullet train project is a significant infrastructure development in Gujarat. It is expected to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time between major cities. Once completed, it will connect Ahmedabad with Mumbai, significantly benefiting local commuters. The entire project, from Maharashtra to Sabarmati, is anticipated to be finished by December 2029.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that 81% of the project’s funding comes from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The total project cost is estimated at around Rs 1,08,000 crore. The ongoing work includes challenges like land acquisition, which previously caused delays. However, all necessary land has now been acquired, and construction is advancing.

The construction of the bullet train aims to provide a faster and more efficient mode of transport, easing the burden on existing roadways. The authorities are working hard to ensure that the construction process is smooth while trying to minimise disruption to daily commuters. As work continues, commuters are encouraged to stay informed about alternative routes to avoid traffic delays and plan their journeys accordingly.

In summary, while the closure of the Shahibaug Overbridge is causing significant traffic jams, the long-term benefits of the bullet train project are expected to provide a reliable and quick travel option for residents of Ahmedabad and beyond. The city is committed to improving its transport infrastructure, and with patience from the public, these developments will lead to a better commuting experience in the future.
