Ahmedabad witnessed a tragic incident on the festival of Raksha Bandhan, a day meant for family bonding and celebrations. On this day, a young man named Rajendra Barot was involved in a fatal accident while dropping off guests. Rajendra, aged 39, was returning home with his nieces after celebrating the festival at his house. As he crossed the road at the Riverfront, he was struck by a speeding motorcycle. This unfortunate event occurred near the Ram Rahim temple, and Rajendra was knocked down onto the road.
Both Rajendra and the motorcyclist were immediately taken to the hospital for medical assistance. Sadly, Rajendra succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The motorcyclist, identified as Mehul Parmar, aged 27, also died after being hit by another vehicle shortly after the initial accident. Mehul was from Dahod and worked for a private company.
Witnesses reported that Rajendra was crossing the road when the motorcycle came out of nowhere. Local residents gathered to help and called the police. The traffic police have begun an investigation into the incident, and the motorcyclist was found to be at fault.
In another case on the same day, a woman named Vibhaben Jethwa suffered injuries after being hit by a bus while trying to board it in Anand. She was in Ahmedabad to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with her brother. The bus incident is also under investigation by the traffic police.
Raksha Bandhan is a significant festival celebrated across India, symbolising the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a protective thread, called rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists, and brothers give gifts in return. The festival is deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of India, marking a time for families to come together.
Despite the joy that Raksha Bandhan brings, these incidents highlight the importance of road safety, especially during festive times when many people are on the move. Authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and cautious while driving and crossing roads to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The community has expressed its grief over the tragic loss of life, and many are calling for better road safety measures in the city. As families continue to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, it serves as a reminder to cherish loved ones and prioritize safety on the roads. The police are expected to share further updates as investigations continue into both accidents, aiming to raise awareness about road safety during festive seasons.
