In a heartbreaking case from Ahmedabad, a woman took her own life after suffering severe abuse from her husband and father-in-law. The incident occurred two months after her marriage, when her husband, uncle-in-law, and father-in-law began to harass her. Reports indicate that the father-in-law frequently made inappropriate advances and demanded physical relations. Meanwhile, her husband accused her of infidelity and physically assaulted her. Despite attempts by community leaders to resolve the issues, no changes were made by the father-in-law. Exhausted by the continued torment, the woman tragically chose to end her life on August 2. Her mother has since filed a complaint against her husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law at the Amraiwadi police station, alleging emotional and physical abuse.
The 42-year-old victim had been living with her family and had a 22-year-old daughter. The daughter was married two and a half years ago, and after her marriage, the woman moved into a joint family. Soon after, the abuse began. She confided in her mother about the mistreatment, complaining that her husband was not treating her well and that her father-in-law often made lewd remarks and looked at her inappropriately.
Despite her parents’ intervention, the situation did not improve. The father-in-law’s advances continued, and he would often threaten the woman if she resisted his inappropriate demands. After enduring significant distress, the woman returned to her parental home, hoping for a respite from the abuse.
However, threats from her father-in-law persisted. He warned that if she did not return to her marital home, he would harm her husband. After further attempts at reconciliation by community leaders, the woman reluctantly went back, believing it was the right decision. At that point, her uncle-in-law promised to keep her safe, but the father-in-law continued his abusive behavior.
Even after moving to a rented house in Amraiwadi with her husband, the harassment did not stop. The father-in-law would visit and make inappropriate demands. When the woman informed her husband of the harassment, he accused her of lying and continued to inflict abuse upon her. This torment escalated over the last 15 days of her life, leading to her tragic decision to end her suffering.
The woman’s mother has bravely taken a stand by filing a complaint against the three men, seeking justice for her daughter’s untimely death.
