On August 2, 2025, GLS University hosted a special session for B.Com (Fintech) and ACCA students. The topic was “Understanding IFSC and SEZs: Gateway to Global Financial Integration.” The event featured two esteemed experts from GIFT City, Mr. Yogesh Bobade, General Manager of GIFT Company Ltd., and Ms. Tejasvini Akhavat, Senior Manager at GIFT City.
The aim of the session was to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world financial frameworks. The students learned about International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) and Special Economic Zones (SEZs), focusing particularly on GIFT City, which is one of India’s leading financial hubs.
Mr. Yogesh Bobade provided detailed insights about SEZs. He discussed the legal and tax benefits offered under the SEZ Act of 2005. He described SEZs as special areas that promote growth in sectors like exports, manufacturing, and financial services. Through examples, he explained how SEZs help reduce costs for businesses and enhance global competitiveness. He also clarified the role of SEZ policy in the operations of GIFT City.
Ms. Tejasvini Akhavat offered guidance on IFSCs. She explained the establishment, objectives, and regulatory framework controlled by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). She highlighted how IFSCs enable cross-border financial services, foreign currency transactions, and global investments. Her discussion included the participation of banks, fund managers, insurance companies, and fintech firms in the IFSC ecosystem, shedding light on the opportunities available for students.
Both experts illustrated how IFSC and SEZ policies are interconnected and how they contribute to making India a global financial centre. They also discussed the roadmap for India’s financial future and the professional opportunities emerging for students.
The students gained knowledge about various regional opportunities in international banking, fund administration, cross-border compliance, risk management, and fintech innovations. This session provided an in-depth understanding of the regulatory framework, practical strategies for business facilitation, and the workings of financial institutions in GIFT City. They discovered how courses like Fintech and ACCA align with their career paths.
At the end of the session, a Q&A segment took place, where students asked questions about career paths in IFSC, startups and fintech innovations in GIFT City, as well as internship and placement opportunities. This interactive session was a unique experience for students, allowing them to engage directly with industry experts and see real-world applications of their academic knowledge.
The Faculty of Commerce aims to provide meaningful educational experiences that promote the holistic development and industry readiness of students. This session was an excellent example of how academic institutions can connect students with the realities of the business world, preparing them for successful careers in finance and commerce.
