Water Meter Initiative in Banaj Village Promotes Responsible Water Use

In the historic village of Banaj, located in the Dabhoi taluka of Vadodara district, residents now enjoy 24-hour access to water thanks to the Jal Jeevan Mission. Banaj has become the first village in the Dabhoi area to install water meters in homes. This initiative aims not only to ensure a steady water supply but also to promote responsible water use among villagers.

According to the village sarpanch, the local gram panchayat decided to revamp the water distribution system in 2017. The district water and sanitation committee approved a plan worth ₹11.21 lakh. The government funded 90% of the cost, while villagers raised the remaining 10% amounting to ₹1.12 lakh through local contributions.

The project includes a six-valve system to ensure equal and regular water distribution to each household. Water is sourced from the Narmada River canal, purified at a treatment plant, and then supplied to the village through a collective water supply scheme. The water is stored in a 12-meter high tank and distributed directly to homes via taps.

As part of the initiative, water meters have been installed in 220 households, allowing residents to monitor their water usage more effectively. This change has led to a significant shift in behaviour, with villagers now using water more judiciously. Many residents have even started locking their taps when leaving their homes to prevent wastage.

The introduction of water meters has created a sense of accountability among the villagers. They are now more aware of their water consumption and are motivated to conserve this precious resource. This community effort not only helps save water but also strengthens the bond among villagers as they work together for a sustainable future.

The water supply project has made a positive impact on the daily lives of the residents. With reliable access to water, families can carry out their daily activities without the worry of shortages. The initiative is an excellent example of how technology and community involvement can lead to improved living conditions in rural areas.

As more villages in Gujarat consider similar measures, Banaj’s success story serves as an inspiration. The focus on responsible water use is crucial, especially in regions where water scarcity is a pressing concern. By adopting these practices, villagers can ensure that future generations will also have access to clean and sufficient water.

In conclusion, the water meter initiative in Banaj village exemplifies the importance of community action in managing natural resources. With continued efforts towards sustainable practices, Banaj can serve as a model for other villages in Gujarat and beyond, showcasing how to achieve both water conservation and community empowerment. The residents of Banaj are setting a remarkable example for responsible water use that can inspire many others to follow suit.
