Wealthy Beneficiaries Exposed in Devgad Baria’s Ration Card Scandal

In Devgad Baria, a small town in Gujarat, a scandal has emerged involving 295 individuals holding ration cards meant for the poor. These beneficiaries, classified under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), have been receiving government food supplies despite having annual incomes exceeding ₹6 lakh. The income tax department’s central server identified these individuals, prompting local authorities to take action.

The local magistrate, Sameer Patel, received a list from the income tax department highlighting these beneficiaries. It revealed that they hold Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya ration cards, despite their substantial incomes. After receiving the list, Patel issued notices to all 295 ration card holders, demanding an explanation regarding their income and eligibility for these benefits.

Patel stated, “According to the data from the central server, these 295 individuals have declared annual incomes of over ₹6 lakh in their income tax returns. They do not qualify as poor, yet they are benefiting from NFSA ration cards. We have sent notices to all of them to clarify their situation.”

So far, 195 of these individuals have responded, and their ration cards have been marked as non-NFSA. The remaining 100 beneficiaries are still in the process of providing their explanations, after which their ration cards will similarly be deemed non-NFSA.

This situation has raised concerns in the Devgad Baria community. Many are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation by the food supply department. Activists argue that there might be hundreds more who are not eligible but are still receiving government food supplies. They urge for these individuals to be removed from the list to ensure that only the truly needy benefit from government schemes.

The local administration has confirmed that further checks will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those found illegally holding ration cards. The community is now watching closely to see whether the food supply department will undertake additional investigations. This incident highlights the importance of ensuring that government programs designed to aid the poor are indeed reaching the intended beneficiaries, not those who do not qualify.

Government schemes are in place to help those in need, and it is crucial that these resources are not misused. The situation in Devgad Baria serves as a reminder of the need for transparency in the distribution of such benefits. Going forward, the emphasis must remain on ensuring that assistance reaches those who genuinely require it. This incident could lead to changes in how the government monitors and manages food supply schemes in the future, ensuring that they work as intended for the welfare of the community.
